Clearing the next phase of extraction

The below ground impact of a quarry is a high one. Each new phase will generally completely remove archaeological remains. In such cases we can arrange and manage the efficient clearance of archaeological remains ahead of extraction. We understand the specific working environment of a quarry and the annual phasing which takes place; the fluctuations in aggregate prices and the need for a timely response when clearance is needed.

We also carry our Review of Mineral Planning (ROMP) work and we have been involved in the preservation and avoidance of important remains at several quarries. While at Albion Archaeology, Joe managed works on Ivel Farm, sand quarry (Sandy, Bedfordshire). This involved the recognition and publication of a Ice Age environmental remains and a study of a rare Levallois handaxe. It also involved the preservation of a dense cluster of Roman remains. Many years of sand extraction phases also went ahead with archaeological works of a few weeks each year being sufficient to enable this.
