Joe Abrams joins International Advisory Panel

Updated: Jun 6, 2020

I am delighted to join the International Advisory Panel of the Foundation for Jewish Heritage (https://www.foundationforjewishheritage.com/panel.html). The Charity, working under the leadership of Michael Mail (Chief Executive) does work of the highest standard. The charity places an emphasis on shared heritage and bringing frequently disused and neglected historic buildings back into use. The works to date are inspiring.

These include the creation of an excellent map resource, showing sites of interest (https://www.foundationforjewishheritage.com/mapping-historic-synagogues.html). This works in a similar way to a Historic Environment Record (HER) in the UK.

The Foundation has several roles; identifying, protecting and developing heritage sites in order to inform about the life and contribution of the Jewish community. This has already been a highly effective way of utilising historic buildings to build awareness in people, fostering understanding and empathy. We have a shared heritage and we have a shared future.

I have been contributing ideas to the Steering Group of a truly amazing project, the Great Synagogue of Slonim. The project has a dedicated website which shows very clearly why such work would be beneficial for the understanding of heritage, for preserving what remains of some magnificent buildings. The potential for benefits to populations around these buildings now is also very interesting. It is well established that Heritage sites can stimulate economic activity and promote educational opportunities.
