Appraisal and Feasibility Stage

Risk Recognition and Reduction for landowners and developers

Identify Risk – We provide early stage appraisal of land. These will flag below ground (archaeological) potential and above ground setting issues. We then remain on hand to guide and offer solutions.

Built Heritage advice is a specialist area of 'Heritage' advice. This is frequently needed alongside archaeological advice. In order to cover this aspect we work in partnership with selected built heritage professionals.

Preparation of a Planning Application

Helping Development Teams to prepare a Planning Permission

Reduce Risk – We offer a range of Policy compliant products designed to reduce your exposure to archaeological risk.

Our assessments define known potential, the effect of previous and current land use upon that potential. We then define the likely impact of proposed development and offer advice about additional data-gathering needed to support an application.

Meeting a Planning Condition

Enabling Development

Manage Change – once a development scheme is underway, we will manage the procurement and delivery of archaeological work.

Below ground remains represent a potential variable on a development site. They can affect programme and budget. We are experts in recognising and managing change. We keep our clients informed and help to reduce the effects of archaeological works on the wider development

  • Technical expert and guide

For our clients we encourage decision making which will lead to efficient solutions. Our advice follows Policy and Guidance on a National, Regional and local level.

We are on your team and being on your side can mean pointing out where reflection is needed. It can mean we say that something is not advisable and may not work. This we do with the positive intention of finding a workable solution.

  • Experienced professional advice

Our advice is provided by experienced professionals. We know that risk recognition and reduction rely on experience. That is why our advice is given by archaeologists who have worked in commercial archaeology long enough to recognise risk. They also bring a solution focused approach and an understanding of what our clients need in order to enable development.

  • Value based decisions

When we select a sub-contractor for a piece of work. This is on the basis of value. That’s to say a combination of factors including experience, availability and price. In this way, we are able to pass on well considered prices to our clients. The scope of work may be subject to change like any site-based works; that change will be limited by having been through a rigorous quality check at the outset. In these ways we add value for our clients and reduce risk to ourselves and our sub-contractors.

  • Ethical decision making

We follow the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists guidance (Code of Conduct). We use this to guide our own work and consider professional ethics to be a vital area of expertise. By so doing our clients can be sure that they are getting robust advice of the highest standard.
